Mrs. Peterson of Midway Dies

Versailles, Ky. April 28--Miss Lucy Peterson whose more than a half-century of service to Midway Junior College made her the school's most widely known official, died today in Taylor Manor Nursing Home here after an illness of several months. She was 78.

Her death came just six months after alumnae had gathered at a special homecoming celebration to honor her by establishing a $5,000 scholarship in her name.

Affectionately known to thousands of Midway alumnae, Miss Peterson began her long association with the school when she enrolled in 1899. She stayed on to become a teacher, principal, superintendent, and finally alumnae director, the post she had held the past 12 years.

A "cum laude" graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Education in 1927. Miss Peterson was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, honorary education fraternity. She earned a master's degree in education at Columbia University in 1929. She was a native of Harrison County.

Last year, she published a book, "Miss Lucy's Story" in which she recounted her nearly 60 years of service to Midway Junior College.

Her health had been failing since last December when she suffered the first of a series of heart attacks.

She is survived by three nephews, Charles, Jack and Clifton Marshall, Cynthiana, and four nieces, Mrs. Mac Swinford, Cynthiana; Miss Nancy Collier, Frankfort; Mrs. Edd (Cissy) Gregg, Louisville, and Mrs. Eloise Berry, Ft. Worth, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Whaley Funeral Home at Cynthiana. Burial will go in Battle Grove Cemetery.


Mrs. John Rudder

Mrs. Mildred Moreland Rudder, 69, wife of John Rudder of Owenton, died Monday at the King's Daughters Hospital in Frankfort after a long illness. She was a native of Franklin County and a member of the Peaks Mill Christian Church.

Other survivors are two sons, Roy Rudder, Frankfort, and Sgt. Everett Rudder, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.; a brother, Burrill Moreland, Frankfort; five sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Wind, Mrs. Ola Howard, Mrs. Mattie Manley, Mrs. Georgia Tate and Mrs. Willie Hall, all of Franklin County; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The body was removed from the Smither-Coates Funeral Home in Owenton to the Rogers Chapel in Frankfort where services will be conducted today at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Peaks Mill Cemetery.


Philip Tracy Sr.

Philip (Frog) Tracy Sr., 42, an employee of Wright and Lopez Construction Co., was burned to death early today in a fire which destroyed his houseboat and its entire contents. The boat had been moved in the Kentucky River at the foot of Clinton and Mero streets.

Police and Fire Departments were alerted to the blaze by residents in the Bellepoint area about midnight. When they arrived, the entire boat and its contents were destroyed.

Coroner John G. Rogers launched an inquiry into the nature of the fire and circumstances surrounding it. Tracy returned to the boat, where he resided, from an uptown restaurant about 10:30 p.m. Friday. An hour and a half later the fire was reported. The interior of the boat included a small heating stove, cot and kerosene lamp.

A native of Franklin County, Tracy was a member of the Mt. Vernon baptist Church and a World War ** veteran.

He is survived by a daughter, Miss Nancy Louise Tracy; two sons, Gary Wayne Tracy and Philip Tracy Jr., all of Frankfort; his mother, Mrs. Cethery Humphrey Tracy, Frankfort; a brother, Richard Tracy, Franklin County, four sisters, Mrs. Ada Mae Conway, Frankfort; Mrs. Margie Ann Driscoll and Miss Eleanor Tracy, Franklin County, and Mrs. Betty Tracy Pranty, Louisville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home by the Rev. Roy Lyons. Burial will be in Tracy Cemetery in Franklin County.


Frank H. Mastin

Services for Frank H. Mastin, 72, who died Thursday will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Miller-Blackburn Funeral Home by the Rev. Clarence Walker. Burial will be in Versailles Cemetery. Bearers will be Dennis Cook Sr., James Dray, Bob Reed, Woodrow Kayse, Matt Semones Jr., Lonny Myers.

Injuries Fatal To Pedestrian Hit By Truck

Mrs. Georgia McKinney Sutherland, 59, of Versailles Route 3, died at 11:15 a.m. today at the Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, of injuries suffered when she was struck by a pick-up truck Thursday at the intersection of Main and Lexington Streets here. Mrs. Sutherland was admitted to the Lexington hospital after being treated at Woodford Memorial Hospital her. She suffered head injuries.

She was a native of Woodford County and a member of the Glenn's Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Lemuel Sutherland; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Hamilton, Sadieville; a son, Richard Sutherland, Scott County; a sister, Mrs. Herman Coleman, Frankfort; four brothers, Alex, Justice, and Dixon McKinney, Woodford County, and Robert McKinney, Frankfort, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 monday at the Glenn's Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Sam Hatton and the Rev. H. H. Harper.

Mrs. Mary Page

Mrs. Mary Anna Page died at the Fowler Rest Home in Harrodsburg about 10 p.m. Tuesday. She was a member of the Christian Church.

Survivors are one son, Roy Wiley of Salvisa, a daughter, Mrs. Dewey Perkins, Anderson; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Oscar Wiley, Lawrenceburg.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Gordon Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. James L. Evans. Burial will be in the Versailles Cemetery.

Norman Wiley

Norman Forest Wiley, 57, farmer, died at his home near Alton Tuesday following several months illness.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Carl McChesney, Frankfort and Mrs. Doris Dotson, Lexington, his mother, Mrs. Lucy Wiley, Anderson County, a brother, Charles Wiley, Anderson and a grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Gordon Funeral Home by Rev. Ernest Cruse with burial in the Versailles Cemetery.

Willie Lee (Bill) Tate

Willie Lee (Bill) Tate, 57, a Woodford County farmer, died at 2 p.m. today at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington after a long illness. He had been a deacon at the Clear Creek Baptist Church for 10 years.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mae Woolums Tate; two sons, Melvin Tate, Corbin and Wallace Tate, Louisville; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Roberts, Henry County, four brothers, Raymond and Jasper Tate, Jr., Franklin County; J. M. Tate, Versailles, and Clay Tate, Woodford County, and four grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Clear Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Woodford County. The body is at the Duell-Clark Funeral Chapel.

Kenneth Allen McDaniel

Kenneth Allen McDaniel, 27, Frankfort, died this afternoon at the Health Institute Heart Hospital at Bethesda, Md., after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Perry McDaniel; four daughters, Vickie, Susan, Debbie and Mary Louise McDaniel; a son, Gary Allen McDaniel; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan McDaniel, all of Frankfort; five sisters, Mrs. Yvonne Stewart, Versailles, and Mrs. John West, Mrs. Marie Johnson, Mrs. Gerald Vance, and Mrs. Mollie Fint, all of Frankfort; two brothers, Arthur McDaniel, Frankfort, and William McDaniel, Chicago, Ill., and several nieces and nephews.

The body will be brought to the Harrod Brothers Funeral Home here.


Leonard Gibbs

Leonard W. Gibbs, 75, 117 Linden Avenue, died Tuesday at 2:55 p.m. at the Old Masons Home, Shelbyville, following a long illness. >p? Born in Grafenburg, Oct. 1, 1884, he operated a truck line here for many years and also a furniture store, retiring in 1957. He was a member of the Crestwood Baptist Church and of Shelby Lodge 662 F&AM, Waddy, Ky.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Penelope McMillin Gibbs; a sister, Mrs. A. A. Easley, Frankfort, and a grandson Bobby Gibbs, Richmond, Ky.

Funeral services will be conducted in Rogers Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday by Rev. Henry Downing, pastor of the Crestwood Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in Frankfort Cemetery.

Mrs. Alma Collins Merkley, widow of Joseph Patrick Merkley, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Capital Manor Nursing Home after a long illness. She was a native of Anderson County and a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Preston Wade, Frankfort, and two grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rogers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John C. Chenault. Burial will be in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.
